“Spare The Rod Spoil The Child?”

What a great “tWiSt” on a profound proverb.  This one proverb is misquoted so badly that some people say it is permission from God to beat their children into submission.  I myself have misquoted the same proverb until I read it with an open heart to understand exactly what God is saying.  Proverbs 13:24 says and I quote; “He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.”  It doesn’t say “Spare the rod spoil the child”.  It says we need to be careful to discipline our children and if we do not discipline them we are just showing we hate them.  An undisciplined child is not spoiled they are just uneducated on the ways of God and His plan.  Yes sometimes they need their bottoms warmed but not to the point of beaten into submission.  If done correctly there is a wealth of wisdom picked up by the child that is why it says “but he who loves him is “CAREFUL” to discipline him”.  Someone grab my soap box please.  There are many other profound wisdoms here in this chapter but that one is the most misquoted and misused and abused one that I know of in parenting.  Here is some good stuff:

14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life,
turning a man from the snares of death.

A favorite of mine is:

25 The righteous eat to their hearts' content,
but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.

Proverbs 13

Key Verse:

Proverbs 13:16
Every prudent man acts out of knowledge, but a fool exposes his folly.
Proverbs 13:15-17 (in Context) Proverbs 13 (Whole Chapter)
