Deuteronomy 1-3 are reviews of what has happened.  Moses is reviewing everything to the Israelites and commanding them to teach their children and their grandchildren of the things they have seen and heard before they cross over the Jordon river because Moses will not be going with them because of the sin he committed.  To the people that have survived the journey he explains the law again and how the LORD is the only God that anything else is just idolatry and will not be tolerated.  But he also shows them that even if they do fall away and we know they do that God will still be there when they come back.

Deuteronomy 4:29-31
29 But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and obey him. 31 For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath.

Now if God will do that for this stiff necked people, as He called them, don’t you think He gives YOU the same opportunities?  God is the same today as He was then so why is it we doubt He forgives?  All we have to do is seek Him with all of our heart and soul and He will be there for us.  What are you waiting for, an invitation?  OK, I invite you to seek God with all your heart and soul so that He will touch you.  I promise you that your life will change.  It won’t be all peaches and cream but it will change.  There, now you have been officially invited, no more excuses!  Chapter 5 is a reiteration of the Ten Commandments.
