We left off from yesterday reading about the
feasts and festivals that were to be celebrated and chapter 29 concludes
those. Chapter 30 discusses vows to the LORD and how they
will be bound. Men of course are bound by our word but
women, if the husband says no then the vow is forgiven. If
a girl still living at home makes a vow and daddy says no then the vow is
forgiven and they are not obligated to fulfill it. Let me
warn you now that the next chapter is not for the faint of heart. It
has a lot of killing in it but we have to remember that we must read these to
see what was done in the past. These were times before
Christ and His sacrifice that saves us from God’s wrath when we sin.
But God in His perfect love grows tired of our sin. We
learn that He is long suffering but punishes sin. In
Chapter 31 it is time for the Midianites to fall. Once the
Midianites were defeated their possessions were split among the Israelites.
Again though, the Israelites failed to follow Gods direct orders and
only half way completed the job. They were to completely
destroy all the Midianites and they didn’t. They kept the
women and children for themselves. These were the women
that had enticed the men of Israel to sin and God sent a plague that killed
24,000 people. Moses stepped up to remind them of this and
they did what Moses told them to do. Chapter 32 is about
the Israelites that were given land on the East side of the Jordan .
These men promised to continue to fight with their fellow Israelites
until everyone had been settled in their inheritance before they return to
their own inheritance. So they promised to cross the Jordan
to battle for the LORD. Chapter 33 lists the stages of the
Israelites journey through the desert. Exciting times for
Israel but not so exciting for the enemies of God.
