“Spare The Rod Spoil The Child?”

I was a visitor at a local church yesterday and heard some words that threw me for a loop.  The Pastor stood up and gave a tremendous sermon on putting on the Armor of God daily which was very well done.  He had props and it was very well done.  But towards the end he made a comment about asking him questions and this mother had come to him for counseling on how to handle her child that was out of control and those nasty words came flying out of his mouth, “The Bible says, ’Spare the rod spoil the child’”.  I spoke up and said “Show me in the Bible where it says that?  Nowhere in the Holy Bible will you find those words!”  I don’t think this man has ever been challenged.  Well I got those looks and I heard pages being frantically turned all over the building as he continued his closing statements trying to ignore me he wouldn’t make eye contact with me.  I wanted the man to show me in his old ripped up Bible he was boasting about where that statement was written.  Here is what everyone was showing me:
Proverbs 13:24
He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
Proverbs 13:23-25 (in Context) Proverbs 13 (Whole Chapter)

Sorry but it doesn’t say “Spare the rod spoil the child”.  It says the man that does not discipline his son hates his son and the one that loves his son is careful to discipline him.  After the service I requested audience with the Pastor and he sent the Associate Pastor instead.  There were about 10 people in the room and me.  I was ready to be taken out back and stoned for my comments.  We discussed the fact that his statement was incorrect and that he just told his congregation that it is ok to beat a child.  Of course the man said that if I would have listened to the following statement that he was not saying that it is ok to beat our children but I didn’t hear it nor did the others that I was sitting with.  But in the end it was agreed that his statement was not Biblical and it shouldn’t be used in that context.  I sent an email to the Pastor but I doubt he ever gets to see it.  My point here is never be afraid to say something to the Pastor if he is wrong.  Challenge their statements and have them show you in the Bible where their words are coming from.  Do NOT take them at face value because when you are confronted by a false profit you will be taken in by his smooth tongue.  This man was speaking of the darts thrown by the evil one and became a dart unto himself.  His intentions were good but his context was WRONG.  I do know he is a man of God and he made a mistake and was confronted and now forgiveness is there for him.  We are only human and make mistakes.
